Left Justified: Approval of civil unions | The Rock River Times

COMMENTARY - I've said it before—I can't imagine making love to a man. To me, that is not appealing. I'm biologically wired to be attracted to the female form, and I am happy being a heterosexual. ROCKTON — Children swarmed around the Macktown Forest Preserve Friday and watched history come alive before their eyes.

Students from the area were able to see people dressed in clothing of the 1800s, sitting outside tents and teepees, and explaining how the people of the Rockton area survived in the wilderness as the community first took shape.

"You may get a sense of the way it was before you were born — of the people who helped make this nation what it is today," Alan Harrison, who was portraying Stephen Mack, told a crowd of students Friday at the Gathering at Macktown...

DEVASTATING TORNADO OUTBREAK SERVES AS REMINDER OF IMPORTANCE OF PREPAREDNESS

ROMEOVILLE, IL (NWS) -- It has been more than 20 years since the Chicago area has seen a violent tornado, however, the vivid images of death and destruction coming in from the southeast U.S. should serve as a reminder to Chicagoans of devastating effects of a direct hit from a violent tornado. The last violent tornado to strike the area was August 28, 1990, when an EF-5 tornado leveled portions of Plainfield and the southwest suburbs of Chicago. The long period of time that has elapsed since this tornado has led to many Chicagoans developing a sense of complacency, however, the recent rash of violent tornadoes striking major metropolitan areas should serve as a wake-up call and result in a greater sense of urgency to ensure preparedness for a tornado...

Natural Land Institute - April 28 Wildflower Walkabout

FROM THE NATURAL LAND INSTITUTE - Join us at Howard D. Colman Dells for this Thursday's Wildflower Walkabout

Natural Land Institute Stewardship Director Greg Keilback will lead this hike of moderate difficulty this Thursday, April 28. Owned and managed by NLI, this 55-acre nature preserve is located along Hall Creek, southwest of Rockford. One of the attractive features of this preserve is a series of cliffs known as the dells. Many unique plants restricted to limestone and dolomite outcrops are found here, as well as some northern relict plants. The floral display in the upland woods is one of the best in Winnebago County. Aldo Leopold and Paul Riis conducted some early deer studies in this preserve in the mid 1930's.

The walk will begin at 6:00 p.m. Drive south on Meridian Road, turn right (west) on McGregor Road, turn right (north) on Weldon Road, drive almost a mile and park along Weldon Road. Please call NLI at 815/964-6666 if you have any questions.

getmoving at Healthy Kids Day during Public Health Month Event 4/16/2011

FROM A WINNEBAGO COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT PRESS RELEASE:

It’s a Play Date: for the getmoving YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day/During Public Health Month Celebration. Aims to Get Families Moving Through Play and Wellness Activities

[ROCKFORD, IL 4/8/2011] – On Saturday, April 16, Rockford’s YMCA along with the Winnebago County Health Department are encouraging all kids and parents to come to the Y for a play date and commit to being active and healthy every day. It’s all part of the YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day™ – the nation’s largest health day for families.

The free public event will take place at the YMCA Northeast Branch, 8451 Orth Road, Loves Park from 9 AM to 12 Noon. Featured activities include the Healthy Kids Day Interactive Health and Fun Fair, Healthy Concessions, the Y’s Inflatable Obstacle Course, Climbing Wall, and Family Center activity games. The Healthy Kids Day Fun Run will take place at 11 AM. Day of registration for the run takes place from 9 AM to 11 AM. The cost to participate in the Fun Run is $8.00.

As a leading nonprofit strengthening community through healthy living, the Y holds Healthy Kids Day to teach healthy habits to kids and inspire a lifetime love of physical activity. At a time when one in three children in the United States are overweight or obese (according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), developing healthier habits that include increased physical activity is more important than ever. Good nutrition is vital to good health, disease prevention, and essential for healthy growth and development of children and adolescents. A diet of nutritious foods and a routine of increased physical activity during childhood can set the stage for a healthier adulthood.

“At the Y, we know that parents struggle to find the time to incorporate more active play and healthier habits into their kids’ daily routine,” says Gayle Dixon, Program Director, and YMCA of Rock River Valley. “Doing so doesn’t have to require extra money or resources. It’s as simple as making a play date with your kids, with two key requirements – be active and have fun!”

This year marks the first of a partnership between the Y and the Winnebago County Health Department. The Health Department is also celebrating National Public Health Month throughout all of April. This partnership brings with it many more fun health activities for children and adults. For children, this includes a tooth brushing demonstration, information on access to dental care, vision screenings, nutrition education, back pack safety demonstration, home and sport safety education, healthy environment education and much more. The first 200 families will also receive a special gift to take home and enjoy for the rest of the summer! Adults can get a Healthy Heart Screening (Lipid & CMP Panels) for the price of $15. These tests require a ten hour fast and we recommend drinking plenty of water.

Healthy Kids Day will be celebrated at nearly 1,600 Ys across the country, with more than 700,000 families expected to attend this year. Last year over 280 families participated at the Rockford event, this year we expect over 300 families.

Healthy Kids Day is supported by Dean Foods, Runner’s Image, Coca-Cola, Kiwanis, Rockford Health System, and Maverick Media. In addition, the Northeast Branch is proud to host representatives from Getmoving Now Partners and the Winnebago County Health Department who will be offering interactive games during at the Healthy Kids Day Fun Fair.

Nationally, Healthy Kids Day is supported by the Dodge brand, PepsiCo and Sam’s Club.

For more information, contact the Y at 815-489-1253 or visit www.rockfordymca.org/events, or call Sue Fuller, Public Information Officer at the Winnebago County Health Department at 815-720-4213.

Upcoming Wildflower Walkabouts, April 14th and April 20th

From The Natural Land Institute...

Upcoming Wildflower Walkabouts
Please join us at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 14 at Sugar River Forest Preserve. Don Miller from Severson Dells Nature Center will lead this walk along the sand ridge of the Sugar River. We'll see some wonderful views of the river as well as stop at one of the most scenic spots in Winnebago County. We will be looking along the way for some early sand prairie flowers like birdfoot violets. Plan to stay at the shelter house after the walk for some refreshments, a warm fire and good conversation with fellow walkabouters. What a great way start the walkabout season. Easy walking.

Bloodroot in bloom at Pecatonica River Forest Preserve at our 2010 Wildflower Walkabout.
On Wednesday, April 20 we will meet at Pecatonica River Forest Preserve at 6:00 p.m. Dave Kostka of Angelic Organics Learning Center will take us on a tour of the Pecatonica River Forest Preserve which includes creekside and river edge floodplain forest, several old field meadows, gorges and upland forest sites. Within its 55-acre Nature Preserve lies an oxbow lake with a minimally disturbed mesic forest with several species of unique flora. Hiking will be easy to moderate.

Please call 815/964-6666 for information about these walks.
