Stadelman event offers free health services for women

November 14, 2015

For Immediate Release

ROCKFORD -- Women can obtain referrals for free mammograms and screenings for cervical cancer, free flu vaccinations, blood pressure readings, Body Mass Index (BMI) calculations and more at a Women's Health Fair being presented tomorrow by State Senator Steve Stadelman.

Other free services include blood-glucose and cholesterol testing, pulse oximetry measurements, reflexology and message therapy. Complimentary refreshments and children's activities also are being provided for the event.

When: SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 151-4 PM
Where: YMCA Log Lodge, 200 Y Blvd., Rockford

Stadelman was inspired to coordinate the health fair after meeting Dr. Sandy Goldberg, a breast cancer survivor and television health and nutrition commentator in Chicago. Dr. Goldberg founded A Silver Lining Foundation, which strives for equal access to respectful and dignified cancer screening and diagnosis regardless of socioeconomic status.

"Despite sweeping changes under the federal Affordable Care Act, many women remain uninsured or under-insured. I believe very strongly that a woman's ability to pay should never stand in the way of her receiving basic health care -- especially preventive care," said Stadelman, who commends Dr. Goldberg for working to extend the reach of the foundation she established in 2002.

Since the inception of its breast health program, A Silver Lining Foundation has provided 10,000 no-cost mammograms and diagnostic testing when indicated. ASFL funds partner hospitals across greater Chicago and two locally: SwedishAmerican Health System and MercyRockford Health System.

"There are the haves and have-nots where access to timely, quality medical care is concerned," Dr. Goldberg said. "No one should have to jump through hopes for lifesaving tests, certainly not when coping with a disease as emotionally charged as cancer."

In addition to A Silver Lining Foundation, free health services are being provided by MercyRockford Health System, Winnebago County Health Department, Betterlife Wellness/SwedishAmerican Health System, Walgreens, Peak Home Medical Care and Circle of Wellness. Other event partners include the YMCA, YWCA, E-Z Dinners and New Day Development.
