Wallace Supported Measure to Protect Residents with Pre-existing Conditions Signed into Law

ROCKFORD, Ill. – A bill backed by state Rep. Litesa Wallace, D-Rockford, which would require health insurance companies in Illinois to provide coverage to individuals with pre-existing conditions, regardless of changes to healthcare on the federal level, was recently signed into law.

"With the uncertainty surrounding Obamacare and federal provisions that protect residents with serious pre-existing conditions, this was an important step in ensuring that we prioritize those in Illinois in need of care," Wallace said. "Without the current protections offered through Obamacare, individuals and families could face significant financial and physical hardship."

House Bill 2959 amends the state's insurance code to prevent individual or group accidental health insurance coverage from imposing pre-existing condition exclusions. The proposal was drafted in the wake of proposed changes to healthcare on the federal level by Congressional Republicans. House Bill 2959 received bipartisan support in passage.

"This was a situation where we needed to be proactive," Wallace said. "In a time of increased partisanship, I thank my colleagues on both sides of the aisle for putting aside differences and working to put in place a common sense law."
